THE LAND OF
BEATRIX POTTER
A Family Trip to the Lake District
Portugal has a long and interesting history, and has always been best known as a seafaring nation. Its borders have remained unchanged longer than any other nation in Europe, although it has certainly had its fair share of conflict over the centuries.
The golden sandy beaches of the Algarve, on the southern coast, are by far the most popular with tourists keen on a relaxing break by the sea. But this diverse country has a lot more to offer.
Historic cities such as Coimbra, Porto, and the capital, Lisbon, all have plenty of interest, and boast some of the best seafood restaurants in Europe. Golf enthusiasts, too, will already know of the superb quality of the Portuguese courses, which have long been attracting tourists.
And those seeking a historical aspect to their visit are also well catered for, with castles, fortifications, palaces, and so much more. Border towns like Almeida may be remote, but offer a fascinating insight into a time long since passed.
Portugal is, without doubt, one of those countries that will keep surprising you, the more you explore.
